Lion President Hardee then introduced the first guest speaker, Dr. Martha Salazar-Zamora, Superintendent of Schools for the Tomball Independent School District (TISD) who gave an interesting and informative presentation on student growth in TISD historically and going forward and the need for new facilities, equipment and upgrades necessary to accommodate the future growth.  Currently there are approximately 16,000 students in TISD and growth projections are for an additional 4,500 students over the next 5 years.  A Facility Planning Committee composed of community members and volunteers identified needs including:  technology, infrastructure upgrades, additional swimming pool, buses, and agriculture project barn.  Also, in the fine arts area needs include:  auditorium renovation, instruments, etc.  Facility upgrades include redesigning the front of Tomball Intermediate on Main Street and construction of a new District stadium.  The new stadium would be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, having seating for 10,000 and parking for 3,000 vehicles.  It would be a “bare bones” facility.  There is also a need to provide funding for future landsite acquisitions.  TISD Board of Trustees has approved a $275 million bond issue to be placed on the November 7th ballot.  This amount will have no impact (no increase) on the current $1.34 tax rate. An informative mailing was recently sent to all voters within TISD.

Lion President Hardee then introduced the second guest speaker, Candice Baines, Treasurer of Tomball VFW Post 2427 Auxiliary, who described the Auxiliary’s involvement in the community, help to veterans and fund raising activities.  The Post 2427 Auxiliary provides scholarships for students in the surrounding Tomball community. Through The Point Therapy program, they offer PTSD counseling for former military members.  Their annual Boo-B-Q Cook Off and Craft Show is scheduled for Saturday, October 14th at the VFW Post on Alice Road.  All funds raised are used for breast cancer awareness.  Mrs. Baines indicated that TBLC members are welcome to be a judge at this event that runs from 9 AM to 3PM.
