The Tomball Lions Club sponsored State of Texas Health Department Vision Screening Training and Certification event on Monday, October 30, 2023 at Tomball Fire Station #1. Fire Chief Lion Joe Sykora arranged the training facility for our event. The training commenced promptly at 9:00 a.m. and completed around 1:00 p.m. The Tomball Lions Club provided a light lunch to the attendees. We want to thank Lion Al and his wife Eva Gerhardt for ordering and delivering the meals.
Ms. Yeren Sauceda of the Texas Department of State Health Services conducted the training and testing. All materials for this training were provided by Ms. Sauceda.
Lion Shelia Thomas stated that Ms. Sauceda did a great job in keeping the class interesting and engaging. She learned many things and it truly helped her understand the standards for vision screening.
Lion Russell McKinney attended the class and said the main purpose of eye screening is to identify children who may have a potential vision problem and if they fail are given an immediate referral.
Each attending Lion was tested and at the end of the training received their State Vision Screener License. This license is required by the State of Texas for vision screening at public and private schools, and at licensed day care facilities. The state license is good for 5 years and then must be re-certified to maintain the license.
Our Tomball Lions Club also plans to schedule a training event for the Plus Optix vision screening machine. This will enable attendees to become Machine Certified vision screeners.
