Lion Sara described the Opportunities for Youth Essay & Speech Contest put on annually by the Texas Lions Club.  These contests start at the local high school level and are coordinated by the local Lions Club working with the District Chairperson.  High school juniors and seniors are eligible to compete in one of three categories:  Diabetes Awareness, Drug Awareness, and Outstanding Youth Award (seniors only).  Specific topics for each category are selected in August prior to the start of the next school year.  Local contestants are then judged by their local Club with the 1st place winner going on to compete at the District level.  District competition will be at the 2-S2 Mid-Winter Conference in January 2020.  Winners at the District level go on to compete at the State Convention.  Scholarship funds are typically given at the local level for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.  This is a great opportunity for Lions to encourage youth participation in issues facing society today.  Through its contests at the club level, the district level and ultimately the state level, students can research and gain knowledge on the various social ramifications of both diabetes and substance abuse.
