Lion Director Mike Halbach introduced Guest Speaker Richard Binckley of Katy Texas at the Tomball Lions Club meeting on Friday, August 11, 2023.
Richard was infected with the Polio virus as a youngster which affected his lower extremities.  He received attention from the Texas Lions after he appeared on local Houston media and was invited to attend the Texas Lions Camp during its inaugural year and when he was 8 years old.
He also attended the Camp the following two years as a 9 and 10 year old.  Richard described the positive affects the Camp had on him including giving him self-reliance and how to survive a potential drowning incident teaching him how to remove his leg braces while in water and then how to tread water.  This training likely saved his life during his later teenage years when he accidentally fell into the Gulf while fishing with his brother off a pier in Rockport.

The Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville, TX, supported by the Lions Clubs of Texas, provides summer camp sessions at no cost to children with physical disabilities, Down syndrome and diabetes.  Since opening for campers in 1953, the Texas Lions Camp has had over 79,000 youth attendees including Mr. Richard Binckley of Katy, Texas.
